2018 Severe Housing Deprivation Estimate

As part of improving data on homelessness, Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga – Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) contracted the University of Otago to produce an estimate of the homeless population using 2018 Census data.

These data tables are sourced from the Severe Housing Deprivation in Aotearoa New Zealand, 2018: June 2021 update. (https://www.hud.govt.nz/news-and-resources/statistics-and-research/2018-severe-housing-deprivation-estimate/)

The full report describes the significant caveats around these figures and the reason they are considered a lower-bound (or minimum) estimate, as well as why comparisons over time are not advised. We urge you to read the report prior to using the data.

The HUD website also includes some questions and answers about the report.
