Join us for GovHack - Australasia’s largest hackathon!
GovHack is an annual open government data competition held simultaneously across New Zealand and multiple states in Australia. In 2020 it will be held on the weekend of 14 - 16 August. In 46 hours teams create project pages, proof of concepts, and a video that tells the story of how government data can be reused to address challenges to make our communities better places.
Join us at Unleash Space at the University of Auckland for the Auckland event and experiment, collaborate, laugh and learn. Explore ways to improve civic democracy and use data-driven insights to unlock ways to improve the world. There are national and international prizes up for grabs!
FAQ
How does GovHack work?
The competition will be launching beginning at 6.30pm NZST Friday 14 August with a New Zealand-wide livestream and the competition will officially be launched at 7.00pm NZST. After the livestream, join us and your fellow participants on the GovHack Slack. We will be using Slack and Zoom extensively throughout the weekend to engage with you and other participants. Specific connection information to the Zoom sessions will be distributed closer to the weekend.
How much technical experience do I need?
Not much! Teams participating in GovHack won’t just need programmers - they’ll also be wanting designers to create user interfaces, writers to write the story of their project, filmmakers to make the video, and any other skills you have handy!
If you’d like to learn more about what’s involved on the programming side, we’ll have some talks lined up on Friday to help with this! More information coming soon.
What do I need to bring?
GovHack is BYOD. At Unleash Space there are loads of white boards, electricity, wifi and some big screens for teams to use. Hand sanitiser, antibacterial wipes, and cleaning supplies will be readily available throughout the duration of the event. GovHack is fully catered on the Saturday and Sunday.
Do I need to already have a team?
No! You’ll form teams during the hackathon. Join as an individual and leave having met a lot of like minded people. If you want to bring friends along to the hackathon - great!
Who can participate?
GovHack is open for anyone to participate. GovHack is a free event.
